Check Windows, CPU architecture, and WebView2 first
The official Clash Nyanpasu installation guide lists Windows 10 or later, a 64-bit system, and Microsoft Edge WebView2 as Windows prerequisites. If the application does not open, do not begin by alternating between installer and portable packages. First establish that the operating system satisfies those requirements.
Open Settings, System, and About, then read System type. A conventional 64-bit computer with an Intel or AMD processor uses the x64 package. The v1.6.1 stable release does not provide a native Windows arm64 asset, so Windows on Arm users should not mistake its x64 files for Arm-native builds. If WebView2 is missing or damaged, install or repair it through Microsoft's supported distribution rather than using an unofficial repack.
Use the assets actually listed in the official v1.6.1 release. Its Windows files are x64 builds. The setup.exe and portable.zip labels distinguish installation methods, not two processor architectures.
Decide between the installer and portable ZIP
An installer asset is named in the pattern Clash.Nyanpasu_x.y.z_x64-setup.exe and runs a setup workflow. A portable asset follows the pattern Clash.Nyanpasu_x.y.z_x64_portable.zip and must be fully extracted before use. The installer is usually the clearer choice for regular use on one managed PC. The ZIP is useful for an isolated trial or when running an installer is undesirable.
| Question | Installer | Portable ZIP |
|---|---|---|
| How it starts | Run setup.exe first | Extract every file, then run the application |
| Desktop integration | Intended for normal installed use | Has documented integration limits |
| WebView2 | Still required | Packaging does not detect it automatically |
| Best fit | Ongoing use on one computer | Trials or isolated versions |
The official guide warns that Tauri does not officially support portable mode and documents limitations around system services, notifications, and custom URL schemes. Those notes matter even when the executable opens successfully. Portable means that no conventional installation wizard is required; it does not promise feature parity with the installed build or prove that every piece of application data stays beside the executable.
Install and verify one clean first launch
Exit other Clash or Mihomo clients before setup, including tray processes. Two clients can compete for a local proxy port or repeatedly overwrite the Windows proxy setting, which makes a successful installation look broken. If another client contains a working subscription, record the profile name, selected mode, and any custom rules first. Treat subscription URLs and exported profiles as secrets because they can include an access token.
- From the official v1.6.1 release, choose the file marked
x64-setup.exe. On Windows on Arm, confirm compatibility first instead of looking for an ARM64 stable asset that is not listed. - Run the setup workflow and compare the filename and version with the release page. Stop if a security dialog refers to a different file or unexpected source.
- After launch, open the application's version information. This catches an old shortcut that still points to another installation.
- Import only one known-good profile and confirm that the core and proxy groups load before enabling the Windows system proxy.
- If you need TUN or a service-related feature, test it separately after the basic system-proxy path works.
This order separates three independent results: the desktop application can start, a profile can be parsed by a core, and Windows traffic can reach the local proxy. If the first fails, changing nodes is irrelevant. If the first two pass but traffic does not move, inspect the selected mode, proxy switch, ports, and logs rather than reinstalling immediately.
Extract the portable build and test its limits
Place the portable ZIP in a stable folder where your account can write, then extract the complete archive. Do not launch the executable from an archive manager's preview: the application may not find adjacent resources, and a temporary extraction path can disappear when the preview closes. A browser downloads folder is also a poor permanent location if it is routinely cleaned.
- Verify that the filename contains the intended version,
x64, and theportablemarker. - Extract the complete ZIP into a new folder. Do not copy only the main executable.
- Confirm WebView2 is installed, because the portable packaging cannot be assumed to provide or detect it.
- Start the program and test the interface, profile loading, notifications, and each system integration you actually require.
- Compare a missing integration with the limitations in the official guide before treating it as a corrupt download.
Portable is not a guarantee that every setting is stored in the extracted folder. Verify the behavior of the version you are running before moving the folder to removable media or deleting an older installation. Close Nyanpasu cleanly before moving files so configuration writes are not interrupted.
Migrate without mixing two installations
When moving from installer to portable, or in the opposite direction, preserve the working environment and launch the new package in its own location. Use application-supported export and import where available, or recreate the small set of required settings deliberately. Copying an entire cache or program tree over another version can transfer stale runtime data and obscures which build is running. Never test Windows proxy ownership while both clients remain open.
| Symptom | Check first | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| No window after launch | Architecture, Windows version, WebView2 | Download the matching official package again |
| Application opens without profiles | Which folder and version actually started | Import deliberately; do not copy arbitrary caches |
| Portable integration is unavailable | Documented portable limitations | Use the installer if that integration is required |
| System proxy keeps changing | Other proxy clients and tray processes | Exit all, then launch only one client |
Finish with an observable sequence: the expected version opens, the intended profile loads, the core starts, the chosen proxy mode handles a test request, and exiting the client restores the Windows proxy state. Delete the previous package only after those checks pass. A useful bug report includes Windows version, architecture, package type, Nyanpasu version, exact reproduction steps, and a minimal log with subscription tokens removed.
